Latitude Outdoors - Vaporline Tree Tether

Vapor Line was the first rope line engineered from scratch around saddle hunting rather than borrowed from climbing or arborist work. It was built for maximum strength, durability and water resistance in the smallest package possible. Every tether packs down remarkably small, ships with a premium carabiner, and arrives rigged for single-handed operation—so you cut bulk out of your system without giving anything back on the safety side.

The core is a proprietary Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene blend, pound for pound stronger than steel, that will not absorb water and floats. Around it runs a tightly woven, high-tenacity 100% polyester sheath delivering high UV and abrasion resistance with naturally hydrophobic behavior. Latitude developed the line after wearing ropes out faster than they should have on mobile hunts, wanting something that dried overnight instead of going back in the pack damp.

Every diameter is third-party tested for minimum breaking strength, elongation, diameter and knot-ability against Cordage Institute 1801-07, the standard referenced by ASTM 2116 for low-stretch static kernmantle life safety rope. Tethers ship 8.5 feet long with a 6-inch sewn loop.

TETHER OR LINEMAN BELT?

Two different jobs, and a full saddle setup uses both. The lineman belt keeps you attached to the tree on the way up while you hang sticks and set your platform. The tether is what you transfer to once you are at hunting height, and it is what holds you for the rest of the sit.

The rope itself is identical between the two. Latitude runs them in different colors so you can tell them apart by feel and glance in the dark, which matters more than it sounds like it does at 5 a.m. The real difference is hardware: the lineman belt ships with two carabiners so you can clip to both hips of your harness, and the tether ships with one. That is also why the tether weighs less at every diameter—6.7 oz at 7mm against 9.0 oz for the matching lineman belt.

WHICH DIAMETER?

All three diameters do the same job to the same rating. What changes is how the rope behaves—on your back on the way in, in your hands in the dark, and against bark over a few hundred sits.

7mm is the lightest and smallest tether made, at 6.7 oz. It coils down to almost nothing and disappears into a dump pouch, which is what you want on a long walk-in with everything on your back. The tradeoff is handling: it is the thinnest line here to grab and tend with numb fingers or gloves on, and Latitude does not currently list a mechanical ascender for it.

8mm is the one most saddle hunters land on, and for good reason. At 8.6 oz it carries roughly half the bulk of a standard 11mm rope with no strength penalty, while still leaving enough diameter to grip and manage comfortably. It runs a Ropeman 4 or a Kong Duck if you want a mechanical ascender in the system.

10mm puts the most rope in your hand. That matters more than the spec sheet suggests when it is cold, you are wearing gloves, and you are tending a hitch one-handed at height. More sheath material also means more to wear through where the rope contacts bark. At 11 oz it is 4.3 oz heavier than the 7mm—about a quarter pound—and it takes a Ropeman 1 or a Kong Duck.

The short version: pack weight and bulk push you thinner, cold-weather handling and abrasion life push you thicker. Everything else is equal.

Before you read the breaking strengths below, read the working load: all three diameters are rated to the same 300-pound safe working load with the supplied prusik. The MBS figures climb as the rope gets thicker, but that is margin above the rated load rather than capacity you can use. Choose on weight, packed size and how the rope feels in your hand—not on the biggest number.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between the Vapor Line tether and lineman belt?
The rope is identical in construction. They are made in different colors so you can tell them apart at a glance, and the lineman belt comes rigged with a second carabiner for fast attachment to both hips of your harness. The tether ships with one carabiner and weighs correspondingly less.

What are the differences between the 7mm, 8mm and 10mm tethers?
Weight and packed bulk. The 7mm is the lightest and smallest tether available anywhere at 6.7 oz. The 8mm sits at 8.6 oz and is the most popular choice. The 10mm is 11 oz with the highest breaking strength of the three, and still comes in roughly 40% lighter and 30% smaller than a comparable 11mm rope.

Is the 10mm safer than the 7mm?
No. All three carry an identical 300-pound safe working load with the supplied prusik. The higher MBS on the thicker rope is headroom above the rated load, not extra usable capacity. Pick your diameter on weight and handling.

Is 8.5 feet long enough for big trees?
For most trees, yes. Remember the tether has to reach around the trunk and back to you, so usable length shrinks fast as tree diameter grows—a 24-inch trunk eats better than six feet of rope in circumference alone. If you regularly hunt large-diameter timber, check the trees you actually climb before assuming the standard length works for all of them.

What are the advantages of the thinner ropes?
A standard 11mm rope is roughly twice the size and weight of the 8mm, and Vapor Line gives up no strength making that trade. Less rope means less weight hanging on your harness and a tether that comes in and out of a dump pouch without a fight—which matters at the end of a cold sit when your hands are not working well.

Can I run a mechanical ascender on the tether?
Yes on the 8mm and 10mm, but the device has to match the diameter. The 8mm takes a Ropeman 4 or a Kong Duck. The 10mm takes a Ropeman 1 or a Kong Duck. A Ropeman 1 is not rated for 8mm rope, so do not carry one down from a thicker line. The Kong Duck also needs an oval carabiner to set up.

How does Vapor Line compare to Sterling Oplux?
At 8mm they match on diameter and weight and both pack down small and supple. Vapor Line pulls ahead on UV and abrasion resistance and dries faster after rain, and the tighter sheath weave lets hitch cords adjust more easily with no compromise on safety.

Do I need both a tether and a lineman belt?
For a complete saddle system, yes. The lineman belt protects you during the climb; the tether holds you once you are set. They are not interchangeable, and neither one covers the other's job.
