WHICH DIAMETER SHOULD YOU BUY?

This is where most people get it backwards, so it is worth being direct: the thinnest rope costs the most and the thickest costs the least. That is not a mistake in the pricing. In saddle hunting, weight and packed bulk are the premium, and getting a rope smaller without giving up safety is the hard engineering problem. You are paying for what is not there.

Note the line that repeats across all three: every diameter carries the same 300-pound safe working load with the supplied prusik. The breaking strength figures climb as the rope gets thicker, but that is headroom above the rated load, not usable capacity. Nobody should buy 10mm believing it holds more weight than 7mm in practice.

So choose on feel and packed size. 7mm is the lightest and smallest thing on the market—3.3 ounces under the 10mm and noticeably easier in and out of a dump pouch. 8mm is the middle ground and the most popular choice, half the bulk of a standard 11mm rope at the same strength. 10mm gives you a thicker rope in the hand, which some hunters simply prefer to grip and manage, at the lowest price of the three. None of them is the wrong answer.

What are the differences between the 7mm, 8mm and 10mm options?
Diameter, weight and packed bulk—not usable capacity. The 7mm is the smallest and lightest lineman belt available anywhere at 9.0 oz. The 8mm sits at 10.9 oz and remains the most popular choice. The 10mm weighs 12.3 oz and carries the highest breaking strength of the three while still coming in around 40% lighter and 30% smaller than a comparable 11mm rope. Both the 8mm and 10mm accept a mechanical ascender—the Ropeman 4 or Kong Duck on the 8mm, the Ropeman 1 or Kong Duck on the 10mm.

What are the advantages of the thinner ropes over larger options?
A standard 11mm rope is roughly twice the size and weight of the 8mm, and the materials in Vapor Line mean you give up no strength making that trade. Less rope in the system means less weight on your harness and a belt that pulls in and out of a dump pouch without fighting you. On a mobile hunt where you are climbing, hanging sticks and repacking in the dark, that adds up.

Is the 10mm safer than the 7mm?
No. All three diameters carry an identical 300-pound safe working load with the supplied prusik. The 10mm posts a higher minimum breaking strength on paper, but that figure is margin above the rated working load rather than capacity you can use. Choose your diameter on weight and handling.

Why does the 7mm cost more than the 10mm?
Because reaching the same safe working load in a smaller, lighter package is the harder engineering problem and takes more expensive material. In saddle hunting, weight and bulk are what you are trying to eliminate, so the reduction itself is the premium.

Why did Latitude develop the Vapor Line ropes?
They were burning through ropes faster than they should have under the wear of mobile hunting, and they wanted something that would dry out after a rainy sit instead of staying soaked. Nothing on the market did both well enough, so rather than settle they built a rope with more durability and a naturally water-repelling construction.

What is the difference between the Vapor Line tether and the lineman belt?
The construction is identical. They are made in different colors purely so you can tell one from the other at a glance in low light. The lineman belt also arrives rigged with a second carabiner, which lets you clip fast to both hips of your harness.

Can I run a mechanical ascender on these ropes?
On the 8mm and 10mm, yes—but the device has to match the diameter. The 8mm works with the Ropeman 4 or the Kong Duck. The 10mm works with the Ropeman 1 or the Kong Duck. A Ropeman 1 is not rated for the 8mm, so do not carry one over from a thicker rope. If you go with the Kong Duck you will also need an oval carabiner. Ascender fit depends on rope diameter, so confirm your exact device before you weight it.

How does Vapor Line compare to Sterling Oplux?
